From Trials to Triumph: A Single Parent Executive's Road to Empowerment
Jan 24, 2024Hello fellow travelers on this unique path of single parenthood and professional life. I'm Harald Winkmann, and today, I want to share with you a story – my story. It's one of trial, tribulation, and ultimate transformation, and I hope it resonates with you, offering insights and perhaps a shortcut or two on your journey.
From High-Flying Executive to a Wake-Up Call
My resume might impress with titles and degrees, but it was the untold story of personal upheaval that truly defined my journey. The end of my tumultuous marriage and the start of my life as a single father to two wonderful yet understandably shaken boys threw me into a what felt like a Herculean balancing act between my executive career in tech and my responsibilities at home.
The Overlooked Casualty: Self-Care
It was a stark reminder that success isn't just measured by professional achievements but also by our ability to care for ourselves and those we love.
As I threw myself into work and fatherhood, my own well-being started to take a hit. It wasn't a dramatic realization but a gradual acknowledgment that to be there for my kids, I needed to be there for myself too. (this blog image shows me during this time in my life when let's say I was not so fit 🙂)
The Road to Recovery: Steps Towards Wellness
I started to make changes, embracing support where I could, dedicating time to meditation and fitness. For example, I set up a mini home gym, carving out time for regular workouts, and established a dedicated home office space – setting clear physical and mental boundaries. My diet changed; intermittent fasting became a norm, and I discovered the transformative power of neurofeedback devices. Social connections were rekindled, and hobbies like martial arts became a part of my life again. Even a pet cat joined our family, bringing joy and comfort. These weren't groundbreaking discoveries, but they were significant shifts that helped me find a healthier balance.
A New Chapter: Coaching and Empowerment
Moving into coaching felt like a natural progression. It was less about leaving my old life behind and more about using what I'd learned to help others navigate similar paths. Sharing strategies and insights has become a way to connect with and support fellow single parent professionals.
A Message to My Fellow Single Parent Professionals
You're not alone on this journey. The struggles are real, but so are the opportunities for growth and fulfillment. Together, we can share, learn, and support each other towards not just coping or surviving, but thriving.
Remember, support is not a weakness. It's our strength!
